NEWPORT residents are being reminded lock up their doors and windows after a spate of burglaries in the area.

There have been nine burglaries in the last two weeks in the Central Newport area including Dewsland Park Road, Clytha Square, York Place, Emlyn Street, Caroline Street, Ombersley Road and Evans Street.

In nearly half of all burglaries reported, they were as a result of windows or doors being left unlocked, especially back doors or windows.

Items stolen include laptops, televisions, cash and jewellery. Another four offences took place when the owners were not at home.

Officers are patrolling areas were offences have taken place and speaking to residents about their security.

Detective Inspector Andrew Tuck from Newport Central Police Station said he understood that in warmer weather residents wanted to open their windows, but added "it only takes minutes for someone to steal your keys, cash or other smaller items left lying around".

Gwent Police have also issued crime prevention advice; reminding residents to hide valuables, never leave windows wide open, move garden tools from the back garden after using them, and don't advertise if you are going on holiday on social media.
