Police have also confirmed that the Chevrolet Matiz had been stolen.

Another neighbour said: “They must have come down the road and hit the curb hard for the car to have been on its side. Their car crashed into ours which pushed it forward into the rear of our neighbours van. “I grabbed one of the boys and the others ran off.”

He added: “We need speed bumps here. This is the second incident here in the past few weeks.

“People are driving like idiots down here. It’s not safe for the children playing.”

“We shouldn’t have to keep our kids locked up inside – it’s unfair. They should have the freedom to play in their own gardens and on their own streets safely.”

The couple whose Vauxhall Vectra was parked on the road when it was hit said their car is a write off. Samantha Meredith, 31, said she was in the house with her three children and her partner Nicholas Bates, 32, when she heard the crash.

Miss Meredith said: “I heard a loud boom – I thought a bomb went off or something. There were five of them – two of them ran one way up the street and two ran the other way. “People come rallying down the street. It’s turned into a dangerous street.”

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said a 17-year-old boy from Newport was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with facial injuries following the crash. He has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking and driving away and is currently in police custody.

They were called at 9.55pm reporting a road traffic collision on Constable Drive, Newport where a Chevrolet Matiz (believed to have been stolen) collided with a parked car.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about this incident to call 101 quoting log 548 17/06/15.

Five people are reported to have got out of the car after it crashed and ran off.

A resident who wanted to remain anonymous said that speed bumps were needed in the road "before one of our children is killed".

Police and two fire engines were at the scene.

It is the second crash on Constable Drive this month after a quad bike collided with a car.

UPDATE: 7.49am

A CAR crashed into a parked vehicle in St Julians last night.

Firefighters from Maindee and Maplas were called to the collision on Constable Drive at 9.55pm. The car was on its side and fire crews made the vehicle safe.

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said no one was injured.
