AS A BIG fan of the film The Bodyguard, I was very excited to go along to watch The Bodyguard Musical starring the X-factor winner Alexandra Burke.
The beginning of the show did not disappoint, as a loud gunshot brought the show to a start, and had the audience instantly enticed.
Playing the character Rachel Marron, Alaxandra Burke was by far the leading lady and star of the show as she brilliantly sang Whitney Houston's classic songs such as I Will Always Love You, I’m Every Woman, I Have Nothing and many more! She more than does Whitney justice, blasting out these show tunes in full diva mode.
Stuart Reid portrays his character, Frank Farmer, the bodyguard, very accurately, akin to Kevin Costner in 1992. Farmer, usually meticulous, allows passion to cloud his judgement when he takes Rachel to a karaoke bar, leaving her vulnerable and is in a constant fight of emotions to try to and keep control of her safety.
Mike Denman’s performance as “the stalker” was perfectly unnerving and the audience was intrigued by his insidious presence, despite him not uttering a word the entire performance. Luckily, the wonderfully performed songs allowed some respite from the fear.
Photographic montage and film sequences were also included, helping to portray the original film element of the show in addition to adding to the emotions in the musical.
The finale song I Wanna Dance With Somebody had everyone in the audience on their feet singing and dancing which could have continued into the night.
