PUPILS at a Torfaen primary school were awarded certificates after demonstrating their knowledge of sun protection following a workshop from two Cwmbran mums.

Mother-of-four Kelli Aspland, 36, and mother-of-three Laura Griffin, 32, have started their own company, Auriella, after inventing a new sun cream applicator called Solar Buddies, which helps children apply sun cream.

The pair took their product into St David’s School in Cwmbran in May to observe how 200 pupils, aged between four and 11-years-old, got to grips with the product.

As part of the day, the pair ran a workshop teaching about the importance of staying safe in the sun, and skincare.

The mums returned to the school on Monday and pupils presented an assembly for them to show what they had taken from the workshop.

The assembly included songs, presentations and some children even designed posters.

Mrs Griffin said that it went really well, adding: “The children remembered all the solar steps we taught them”.

The pupils at the school are the first to receive a Solar Buddies Sun Safe certificate.

The duo have been invited to attend more schools, including one in Birmingham as well as two in Manchester.

The product’s official launch was in March and was supported by the charity Melanoma UK.

The idea came as the mums noticed that when their children were in primary school, they would make a mess when trying to apply their own sun cream.

The shape of the bottle is chunky so it is easier to grip; the roller ball controls the flow of the cream, while the sponge helps children to rub the lotion in.

The bottle is refillable so parents can choose a product most suitable for their child.
