RIDERS from Cwmbran Vale Rotary Club cycled 50 miles yesterday to say ‘Get on your bike’ to prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer claims the lives up to 30 men each day in the UK and is the second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer.

That’s why this Father’s Day Cwmbran Vale Rotary Club wanted to join thousands of charity supporters from across the UK for the national fundraising effort the ‘Rotary Ride’.

Members of the public put on their lycra to meet at The Oasis Club at Glan-yr-Afon Leisure Centre before taking on either a 25 or a 50 mile ride raising money for Prostate Cymru.

The aim is to raise money and awareness of prostate cancer, a disease that currently affects one in eight men during their lifetime, with over 300,000 men in the UK currently living with the disease.

Keith Davies, of Cwmbran Rotary club, explained: “Of course it’s not just fathers who are affected by this deadly disease, it’s friends, brothers, sons or even your neighbour. That’s why we’re holding this ride in Cwmbran to help support those affected by prostate cancer, and we felt Father’s Day was a great way for people to spend quality time together while raising money and awareness for charity.”

In Wales, prostate cancer is the most common cancer, with 2,550 Welsh men diagnosed each year and over 500 deaths.

One man in every eight will be diagnosed with the disease, with the risk increasing to one in three if there is a family history. The aim of Prostate Cymru is to ensure that all men in Wales have equal access to tests, treatments, knowledge and support.
