A CWMBRAN pensioner was left with a broken jaw after he says a bus failed to drop him off at his usual stop leaving him to walk quarter of a mile.
88-year-old Fredrick Brain catches the Stagecoach bus weekly from his home in Sandybrook Close, Two Locks to Cwmbran town centre to go shopping.
But last week, he says the bus failed to drop him at his usual stop- which is just metres from his home- and instead he had to walk quarter of a mile that resulted in a fall that broke his jaw in two places.
Stagecoach have said they are now investigation the incident.
His son, Martin Brain, said: “I feel this is something that could have been avoided if the driver had completed the normal route.
“My father was never informed that the drop off point would be changed and I feel lessons must be learned that changing a route can cause problems for older people who use the bus.”
After leaving the No 7 bus at around 12.30pm last Thursday- after Mr Brain says the driver said he could not take the bus down the normal route along Ton Road as it was a bigger vehicle than usual and the driver had concerns about parked cars.
This meant Mr Brain had to walk home from Henllys way.
But on his way home, he tripped and fell. He was able to make it to his home and an ambulance was called by his daughter.
He was taken to The Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport where he was found to be suffering with a broken jaw, swelling on the left side of his face, a torn bottom lip and cuts on both hands.
He was released from hospital on Saturday, but will be returning this week for an operation to fit metal plates in his jaw.
Marketing Manager for Stagecoach in South Wales, Nathan Griffith-Williams, said: “We were concerned to learn of the accident that Mr Brain had whilst walking along the road, after alighting from the bus.
“Using our vehicle tracking system we have checked the running of the Route 7 buses at the time of the incident and also either side of the incident, and whilst we were aware of issues with parked cars, these services all appear to have operated via Ton Road as normal.
“We are in the process of downloading CCTV from the bus to verify that this is the case. We obviously wish Mr Brain a speedy recovery from the injuries he sustained.”
