PARK wardens have been withdrawn from Tredegar Park after a warden was attacked and needed hospital treatment.

Newport City Council has decided to withdraw the services of its wardens every evening at 6pm with immediate effect until July 10.

The park will remain open to the public until 10pm but gates for vehicle access will close at 6pm.

This decision was reached following a risk assessment carried out by Tredegar Park’s management team.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “At about 8.30pm last night (June 22), a group of males and females (mostly youths) were gathered in the park. An argument between a male and female youth broke out and the park warden intervened. The park warden was assaulted by another older male.

“Gwent Police are carrying out enquiries to locate the man responsible and would appeal for anyone with information to call them on 101 quoting log number 505 22/6/15."
