THE TRIAL of a Newport man accused of a string of sexual offences in the 1970s continued today as another victim told how he abused her aged nine.

Gerald Baker, aged 58, of Sudbury Walk, Newport, previously pleaded not guilty to six counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape at Cardiff Crown Court on March 5. He is on conditional bail.

The alleged offences date back to the 1970s when the defendant was a teenager.

The jury watched a police video interview with one of the alleged victims from last year and heard how the victim, then aged nine, woke up and found the defendant on top of her attempting to have sexual intercourse.

The alleged victim told the court while giving evidence over video link: “I was only nine; I didn’t know what was going on.

“I didn’t know what he was doing.

“I knew it wasn’t right, but I didn’t know why it wasn’t right.”

The court heard how during the attack the defendant placed his hand over the victim’s mouth when she tried to shout out.

The alleged victim said it was a ‘definite recollection’ of what had happened and said: “I am relived to get it out; I am relieved I have said my piece.”

On Monday prosecutor James Wilson said Baker allegedly gave one of his victims a beaker of his own urine which she thought was cloudy lemonade and made her take a “big gulp” of it before allegedly raping them.

In her police interview in 2013, which was played in court, the first victim, who was allegedly raped and indecently assaulted by Baker, said: “He told me I was special and that he loved me.

“I just thought it was normal.

“I thought sex was love and I was getting attention.

“It happened and it’s had an effect on my relationships."

When interviewed by police in December 2013, Baker denied having any knowledge of the allegations.
