POLICE warning to Newport residents to stop their cars from being targets.
Officers in Alway and Maindee are warning drivers to check their vehicles before they leave them to make sure nothing is on show. There has been 10 reports of thefts from vehicles in the last week and the main areas affected are Lliswerry and St Julian’s. They have warned that a 10 second check could stop the cost of a smashed window.
PC Nic Donovan said: “We have seen a rise in thefts from vehicles and the main way thieves are breaking in is to smash the car window when they see valuables on show. Items ranging from sat navs, mobile phones or even spare change has been stolen.
“Our patrols are on-going and we’re looking for any potential offenders but we are asking drivers to take every opportunity to protect themselves. Think of your vehicles through the eyes of a thief – anything of value is worth it for them. Our advice is take absolutely everything with you when you leave your car or if that’s not possible, hide it in your boot.”
