RUGBY legend Gerald Davies and author Tim Lebbon was among the judges for a story writing competition at Goytre Fawr Primary School last week.

After receiving 30 entries for the competition last year, the school decided to make it an annual event.

A panel of judges, including the headmistress Nicola Sutherland, read each of the stories before unanimously agreeing on a winner.

The top three stories were then read out at a special assembly last week by Mr Lebbon and Mr Davies, before the winners were presented with book tokens as a reward for their efforts.

Mr Lebbon, a horror and fantasy writer who has had 32 books published, said: “The school works had to introduce books as much as tablets, so it’s been great to keep an eye on my future competition.

“The children have great imaginations and are writing really well constructed stories. It’s refreshing and takes me back to when I first picked up a pencil.

“The school runs a really well stocked library and the children really look after it. Having books is an important part of it all.”

Year 3 pupil Jessica Pendry won the top prize in Key Stage 2, followed by Martha Price-Smith from Year 6 and Year 5's Ella Jones.

While Blue Holman in Year 2 won from the Foundation Phase's award, followed by William Edwards, who is in Reception, and Jack Jones, who is in Year 2.
