A WALK along the new A465 Heads of the Valleys road between Tredegar and Brynmawr has been organised to celebrate completion of the dual-carriageway.
The five-year £110 million project to dual the 7.8 km stretch of road is the third phase of the Welsh Government’s plan to finish the dualling of all six sections of the A465 between Abergavenny and Hirwaun by 2020.
On Sunday, July 19, a walk is being held to visit the new stretch of road, which includes the highest point on the A465 road which sits 409 metres, or 1,340 feet, above sea level.
The trek, called Walk to the Highest Point, will be the only chance to walk along the stretch of the new dual carriageway before it is officially opened to traffic.
The event is open to walkers, non-motorised scooters, cycles, mobility scooters and wheelchairs and there are three different walk lengths of 2k, 4k and 6k. All walks will start at Rassau Industrial Estate at the Carillion sit car park.
Blaenau Gwent Council is encouraging people to raise sponsorship money, with all funds raised on the day to be given to the Tredegar and Blaenau Gwent mayoral charities. The Blaenau Gwent Mayor’s Appeal is for Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice and Ysbyty’r Tri Chwm, whilst the Tredegar Mayor’s appeal is for Valley SANDS.
Sponsorship forms can be requested by calling Chris Smith on 01495 355296 or at chris.smith@blaenau-gwent.gov.uk or Christine Keane on 01495 722532 or at tredegartc@btconnect.com
