THOUSANDS attended the long-awaited opening of Friars Walk earlier this morning.
Shoppers pushed against the barriers ahead of the opening at around 10am on Thursday morning.
After speeches from the likes of First Minister Carwyn Jones and Newport City Council leader Bob Bright the ribbon was finally cut, and local residents could sample the £100million retial and leisure scheme for the first time.
With more than 20 shops and a dozen restaurants already open, and many more set to open in the next few weeks, there was an overhwelming excitement for clothes to be bought and food sampled.
The Argus was at the front of the action to watch the drama unfold.
