NEWPORT Bus removed services from 7-10pm in the Ringland and Alway area after two acts of vandalism, nine minutes apart, smashed bus windows last night.

The company has reported three nights of consecutive acts of vandalism, with solid objects including stones and halves of house bricks thrown at the vehicles between the hours of 5.35-6.50pm on December 6-8.

Seven acts in six weeks since November 16 have left the company on the verge of pulling the night services in the area, although the service shall resume tonight.

Director of operations at Newport Transport Morgan Stevens said that the evening service would return but would be removed for a two or three day period, if similar issues occur.

The first incident of note occurred on Monday November 16 on Vaughan Williams Drive, Always at 6.05pm, followed by another six days later on Alway’s Ladyhill Road at just before 4.55pm.

A bus on Lighthouse Road in Duffryn was targeted on Friday December 4 at 7.10pm before this week’s incidents – two at Ringland Centre on Sunday and Monday at 5.35pm and 6.50pm respectively.

But with the two incidents in both directions of the service on Ringland’s Hendre Farm Drive between 6.16-6.25pm forced the removal action from Newport Bus.

A dispersal order is currently in effect from Gwent Police, which started at 6.30pm on Tuesday, covering Ringland Centre, Hendre Farm Drive, Cot Farm Circle, Milton Court and the surrounding areas.

Sarah Davies, Newport East Inspector, said: “Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams will not tolerate this dangerous behaviour and anyone identified as committing crime will be dealt with through the criminal justice process.

“We are actively working with our partners to address the issues and identify those responsible.”
