MILLIONS of TV viewers tonight saw Newport singer Tobias Robertson perform on The Voice UK — and win through to the next round.

The 22-year-old, whose great aunt was Cilla Black, sang Randy Newman’s You’ve Got A Friend In Me, from Toy Story, in the blind auditions and secured the backing of Boy George, one of the BBC1 show’s four coaches alongside Ricky Wilson, Will.i.am and Paloma Faith.

The Culture Club star said: “He’s great,” before pressing his button and turning his spinny chair.

As he was the only coach to do so, Tobias is now on Team George and will next appear in the series’ battle rounds.

Boy George told him: “You’ve got a friend in me, my friend.”

After Tobias introduced himself, Ricky Wilson said: “Great name. Halfway there with a name like that.

“South Wales is the home of singing. I think you’ve made a few more fans today.”

Tobias said he wrote his own songs and, asked what style of music, replied: “Folky, bluesy, souly.”

Will.i.am said: “Cooly. I’m so happy George turned for you.”

Boy George, who had already filled seven of the 12 places on his team, added: “I’m trying not to turn as much but unfortunately to me you’re a real singer.

“I was wondering if anyone else was going to turn. They didn’t so you’ve got me.”

Paloma Faith congratulated Tobias and told him: “Well done, mate. You look lucky.”

Before his performance, he said: “Music does run in my family. My great auntie was Cilla Black, obviously very famous for her music career.

“I’m actually feeling just a little bit terrified. It’s always just amazing to have in the back of my mind that someone I shared blood with went on to achieve such great things.

“To get a chair to turn today would mean a hell of a lot to me. I owe it to myself.”

Backstage, Tobias showed host Emma Willis photos of Cilla Black’s wedding, including one of his mum, who was with him in The Voice studio for support, as a bridesmaid.

His mum, Gina, said: “I was 10. It was so exciting. It was fabulous. On that day I remember coming out of the church and seeing a cameraman up a lamppost, then going home to my grandmother’s and seeing myself on telly. It was surreal.”

Tobias told the Argus after the show : "It was amazing. I didn't go in with any preconceived ideas about how it was going to go.

"Just to perform as best as I can.

"When Boy George turned around I thought oh my god. I still had to carry on singing. He turned a minute in - I was really chuffed and it took me by surprise that he turned that early.

"It's so amazing that I've got through."

"He has such a wealth of experience and is such an interesting person. He's a very talented individual - he doesn't only apply himself to one medium he's involved in art and fashion."

He added: "My mum is a massive fan of his.

"Song wise, the context he sings about and the way he writes I think is similar to how I write.

"I enjoy so many different styles of music - I would probably get on with any of the coaches but Boy George was the one I mostly connected with - it felt right."

The Voice UK continues next Saturday on BBC1.
