A 65-YEAR-OLD man has died at the swimming pool at Newport International Sports Village.

Paramedics and an air ambulance were called at 11.45am this morning after a swimmer, from Newport, suffered a medical emergency but he died at the poolside.

Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The pool and tennis centre have been closed as a mark of respect.

Staff from Newport council's health and safety team and environmental health officers are currently at the pool while investigations are going on.

A spokeswoman for the council said it was "deeply saddened" to hear of the customer's death.

Newport Live, which runs the centre, said emergency services were called immediately.

A Wales air ambulance arrived at the scene at 12.01. A spokeswoman said the man was taken to hospital by a land ambulance.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: "We were called at approximately 11.45am this morning, Tuesday April 5, to a medical emergency at the pool and tennis centre on Spytty Boulevard in Newport.

"We sent a paramedic in a rapid response car and a crew in an emergency ambulance to the scene, who were supported by a community first responder and a Wales Air Ambulance."

Police said they were called at 11.59am following concerns for the safety of a man at the pool.
