HUNDREDS of train fans gathered across Gwent to see a glimpse of Britain's most famous steam engine the Flying Scotsman today.
The preserved locomotive steamed through Abergavenny, past Pontypool and Cwmbran towards the Severn Tunnel to London Paddington through Wales.
The train was running 33 minutes later than scheduled as it passed Cwmbran Station at around 6.24pm.
British Transport Police gave a safety warning ahead of the train's visit, urging onlookers to keep away from the tracks.
Former railway worker Bernard Snowball, 69, of Cwmbran, said afterwards: “It came through a bit quick. I have seen many steam engines and they are always so impressive.
“I have been surprised at how many people have come to see it and it shows the popularity of classic railway engineering.”
As the train came through Cwmbran Station, onlookers took videos and snapshots of the 93 year-old steam locomotive.
Once it flashed past in barely a minute, people then applauded the popular train.
Alan Bailey, 34, who works in Ponthir and lives in Abergavenny said: “I heard it was coming past and thought I would pop down after work. I can’t believe how many people are here to see the Flying Scotsman.
“I have seen steam engines before but not on this scale. Ever since I was a small boy I have always been interested in trains.”
In the video, a police officer can be heard shouting for onlookers to keep back away from the lines.
Stuart Matthews of Cardigan Close, Croesyceiliog, added: “It’s a great to see it coming through Cwmbran and it is good to see steam back on the railway.”
