LAST week we featured a picture of Clarence Place in Newport c.1901.
THIS is the junction between Clarence Place, Chepstow Road and Caerleon Road. The photo dates to before 1901 when the present Clarence Quadrant buildings were erected.
Right in the centre of the picture is the small cab drivers shelter. On that site today is the Cenotaph which was erected in the early 1920s to commemorate the dead of the First World War. Cenotaph means Empty Tomb.
To the right is Corporation Road and just along was the power station which supplied power to the tram depot next door. On the left would be built the Odeon Cinema built in the 1930s Art Deco style.
The Odeon became a church and now is the NEON arts centre

WE used to live by the Cenotaph of Remembrance, on Caerleon Road, by the bridge. Every Sunday my grandmother, Lillian Morrant, cleaned, washed and swept the Cenotaph. Her husband, Issac Clother, died in the Battle of the Somme. He was in the Royal Artillery. She used to always place flowers behind the Cenotaph in his memory.
Celebrations of the first day of battle, 100 years ago, at the Battle of the Somme was commemorated last Friday. In the old picture before the Cenotaph was built there was a funeral home - this was knocked down and the tax office was built.
Clarence Place used to have every shop you could think off - you didn’t have to go into town. There was a pram shop, post office and much more. There also used to be an Odeon cinema there.

THIS week’s Now and Then is of the Cenotaph at Clarence Place, Newport. The tall building behind it is the Income Tax offices, the road to the left goes under the railway bridge and out to Caerleon. The road on the right leads out to Maindee which is the Chepstow Road. There is also another road on the right leading to Corporation Road.

THE Now and Then picture is of Newport’s Cenotaph which years ago there was two big houses behind it. These were demolished and replaced by offices and the tax offices.
Also Caerleon Road can be seen and Chepstow Road. The Odeon Cinema was nearby and a big building opposite which bus employees used for there entertainment etc. On the right is a florist on the corner. Also the Artful Dodger pub and a few houses.
