THE second annual Bettws Big Picnic has been hailed a success after attracting more than 1,000 people.
The event held on Saturday took place on Bettws Social Club’s field and was organised by cllr Kevin Whitehead, a member for Bettws. Residents were encouraged to bring their own picnics and children enjoyed a host of games including playing on the bouncy castle.
Representatives from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Gwent Police and Newport City Homes attended along with a variety of local charities.
Cllr Whitehead said: "It has been absolutely unbelievable. We had about 500 people attend last year - we have more than doubled that this year.
"It has been a really great day. It's all about bringing people together.
"It has been fantastic display of community spirit."
The day has raised around £300 for the Alzheimer's Society. Cllr Whitehead thanked members of Newport’s EnergiZe Radio who provided the music, Bettws Social Club, and co-organisers Jason Jordan and Cllr Jan Cleverly along with John Hill, a Bettws resident who has been collecting rubbish.
