A CAMPAIGN to re-open a popular water feature in Newport’s Tredegar Park has attracted widespread support.

The pirate-themed feature at the park was closed in 2014 after Newport City Council said it would cost the taxpayer £200,000 to repair or replace the facility.

But a petition set up by the city’s Liberal Democrat group calling on the council has so far attracted 357 signatures, while an associated Facebook page has been liked by 567 people.

Campaigner Michael Enea said he had regularly taken his two children to the water feature while it was open and called its closure “tragic”.

“Our city deserves to have a water park which residents can be proud of,” he said.

“Newport is drastically falling behind its neighbouring towns and cities who all offer a water-park."

Liberal Democrat spokesman for Newport East and former Assembly candidate Paul Halliday also backed the campaign.

"Making sure our young people have outdoor space where they can stay active and experience enjoyment is really important,” he said.

“Since Labour gained control of the council in 2012 we have seen play areas around the city slowly go into decline.

"Should we be elected next year reopening the water area at Tredegar Park is only one of the improvements we will make across the city.”

A council spokeswoman said the authority was “extremely disappointed” it had to close the feature, but had plans to redevelop the site in the future.

“In recent years about £1m has been invested in the park, including the installation of children’s play equipment, and it is the home of the city’s skate park,” she said.

“It remains extremely popular and well used by families, walkers, cyclists and sports teams who regularly use the pitches.”
