With the Severn tunnel closing today for six weeks, here are some alternative ways to get to London from South Wales.

1) Fly

If the train can't take you, try the plane. Airline FlyBe today launched flights from Cardiff to London, meaning you could fly from South Wales to the centre of the capital in an hour.

While the Severn Tunnel is closed, there’ll be up to three flights a day to London City Airport – and up to three more to get back home on the same day.

If checking in online and bringing your printed boarding pass, you’ll be able to skip check-in at terminal.

Single tickets start at £19, with return tickets ranging from £50 to £100.

2) Coach

Taking the coach to London is another option and, because of the closure of the tunnel, it takes about the same time as getting the train.

The train journey from Newport to London is expected to take up to two hours and 45 minutes and the majority of National Express’ coach journeys take around three hours to get to Victoria coach station.

National Express offers regular services to London from Newport and, during the day, there are coaches about every two hours. Prices start at £5 one way.

Megabus also runs coach services to London. However, their average journey time is around three and a half hours. Prices start at £1.50 one way.

3) Car share

Car sharing, available through websites such as Bla Bla Car, is increasingly popular.

You type in where you want to go and about what time you’d like to leave and a list of drivers who are doing that journey (or similar ones) appears.

If you find a driver whose journey suits you, you can message them and, if happy with what they say, pay for the journey through the website.

With a journey time of at least two hours, the majority of drivers charge around £15 for taking passengers to London.
