BLAENAU GWENT’S AM Alun Davies has spoken out against a opencast quarrying plan which could “destroy a much-loved valleys beauty spot” if given the go ahead.

Alun Davies AM has spoken out about his concerns for the future of Tirpentwys, known locally as the canyon above Llanhilleth and Brynithel and is campaigning against the development.

Mr Davies formally objected to the plans and has asked for the Welsh Government to call in the application on the basis that a decision should not be made by one single authority.

In a letter objecting to the proposal sent to Torfaen Council, as the area falls within the boundary of the neighbouring local authority, the AM expressed his concern of the development’s impact.

"Although the planning application falls within the boundaries of the Torfaen constituency, it is in fact the residents of Blaenau Gwent who are more likely to suffer any detrimental effects.

“The canyon is an outstanding local beauty spot which has within its immediate vicinity ancient woodlands, a pond and wetlands, enjoyed by both local residents and visitors to the area.”

The AM also believes that the development would destroy the canyon and cause irreversible damage to nearby woodland, as well as the “knock-on implications of heavy industry’.This includes access issues, highway safety and pollution.

“I have no doubt that should this planning application be approved the effects on local biodiversity will be irreversible,” he added.

“This area has been enjoyed by people for generations and we should be doing all we can to enhance and protect areas like these, not destroy them.”
