PLANS to replace buildings at a fire-ravaged school will be discussed by Torfaen council tomorrow.

Temporary classrooms were installed at Cwmbran’s Coed Eva Primary School following the deliberate blaze - started in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2016 - to allow the children to continue their education.

Today, Torfaen County Borough Council is seeking approval to carry out design work to replace the infant block which was destroyed and fund the replacement with a spending limit of £3.7 million.

A report confirms that Torfaen's insurer will contribute £2.95 million to a replacement building and outlines two available construction options.

These include replacing the building where it originally stood for £3.1 to 3.3million, or repositioning it and linking it to the remaining site for £3.7 million. The second option is said to be preferred, according to the report.

Depending on the level of the insurance settlement and option chosen by cabinet, a contribution of £150,000 to £350,000, or £750,000 will be contributed by the local authority.

Pupils at the school will continue to use temporary portakabin buildings in the interim.

These will remain on site until the new accommodation is completed, with the rental cost met by the insurer until December 2017.

Officers have recommended that cabinet approve the plans, which will trigger a design and tendering process.

A group of men and boys, aged from 14 to 21, all from the Cwmbran area, were arrested and bailed in January over the blaze.

The group were bailed while the police and fire service carried out a joint investigation. Their bail dates were amended to Monday October 31.

Gwent Police are continuing to investigate the incident at Coed Eva and are still working with fire officials to determine its origin.

Anyone with information about the incident at Coed Eva Primary School can call the police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting log 143 01/01/16.

The cabinet meeting will take place at 10.30am.
