THERE will be no trains running between Newport and Cardiff this weekend as work to replace bridges in Newport continues.
From Saturday until the early hours of Monday the line will be closed and a bus replacement service will operate as engineers upgrade five road bridges.
The new Bridge Street Road Bridge will be lifted into position on Friday night. Maesglas Road Bridge will be demolished and Hawse Lane and Green Lane bridges located in the Marshfield area will also both be demolished by Network Rail’s workers.
Programme manager Karl Gilmore, said: “Reconstruction of the bridges is essential as we prepare the South Wales Mainline for electrification and will be keeping disruption at a minimum. It will provide a faster, greener, more reliable service for the thousands of passengers using the railway every day.”
Rail services to Bristol and London will continue to be affected by the closure of the Severn Tunnel. There is a bus replacement service from Newport for people wanting to travel to Bristol and the South West.
