TWO Ringland teenagers have raised more than £1,000 for St David’s Hospice after cycling 50 miles in memory of relatives they’ve lost to cancer.

Twelve-year-old Mason Jarvis did the challenge for his late father, Glenn, while Lewys Pocock, also 12, cycled in memory of his late grandfather, Peter Breen.

Together they tackled the Taff Trail on Saturday, riding from Brecon to Cardiff.

Mason’s mum, Stacey, said: “Mason’s dad passed away in September 2008, when Mason was only five-years-old.

“It was his father’s 35th birthday on Saturday.

“It’s very emotional, especially with both of them being so young. It’s very close to our hearts.

“I’m very proud he has managed to cycle 50 miles and he says he’ll do it again.

“I think it helps him to think that, by taking part, he’s helping other people.”

The Llanwern High school students stayed together all the way along the route, finishing the 50 mile ride in six hours.

Writing on his fundraising page, Lewys said: “When my granddad was 57, he passed away from cancer.

“I’m sure we have all have someone close to us who we have lost to this awful disease.

“I didn’t get to meet my granddad but I know all about him and how funny and crazy he was.”

Lewys' mum Danielle, 35, lost her father to cancer in 2001 after he received care from St David Hospice - named St Anne's at the time.

“Everyone knew my dad in Maindee and he was a really sarcastic and took the mick out of everyone," she said.

“Even when he had a colostomy bag he just laughed about it. Other people would have been mortified.

“Lewys is a lot like my dad in many ways. He is very much the ‘class joker’ but he also told me he really wants to make something of himself.

“Lewys has a really big heart and has always wanted to do something for my dad. I’m so proud of him.”
