A PARA-CYCLING club from Newport is hoping to raise awareness of the sport 'RaceRunning' at a free demonstration event this week.
Morello’s Marvels Paracycling Club will host the event at the Morrello Clinic on Langstone Business Park, Newport, where they are based.
Invented in Denmark in 1991, RaceRunning involves racing with custom built tricycles without pedals and is popular with people with cerebral palsy, arthritis, amputations and balance problems.
On Wednesday, the paracycling group will invite physiotherapist Gabriella Todd to share her story about setting up the first RaceRunning Club in Wales, and how to get involved.
Competitors take part at both regional and national levels and participate on several terrains, although most events are hosted on athletic tracks.
Club secretary of the Morrello Marvels, Ieuan Coombes, is looking forward to the event and showcasing the sport to newcomers.
“I have been aware of RaceRunning for a number of years,” he said.
“The majority of RaceRunners are reliant on using wheelchairs or walking frames due to their disabilities and this is an exciting, relatively new sport that provides participants with the opportunity to move under their own power at speed.
“Our members are keen to find out more and we would like to extend the invite to any other interested individuals and groups in the area.”
The event starts at 6pm and for more information contact cycling@morrello.co.uk or telephone The Morello Clinic on 01633412211.
