A PIECE of potentially lifesaving medical equipment has been unveiled at a Cwmbran park and social club.

Last month, the Woodland Road Sports and Social Club in Croesyceiliog held a special presentation following the purchase of a defibrillator, to help protect users in event of heart problems.

The equipment will be stored at the café, close to the park which is used for a number of sporting events in Torfaen, including the Race for Life at the nearby Northfields Recreation Ground.

Members from the Cwmbran Trust and the heart charity Welsh Hearts visited the park for the unveiling.

Sharon Owen, the director of Welsh Hearts, said: “It is reassuring to know that there is a defibrillator on site and more importantly people are trained in emergency lifesaving skills.”

Together with the charity, the Cwmbran Trust was influential in allowing the equipment, which can cost in the region of £1,000, to be purchased, and was happy to support the venture.

"The Trust will have served the local community of Cwmbran for 40 years in 2016 during which time it as supported both individuals and local organisations to the tune of £2million of gift aid,” said member David Barnet.

“We are delighted to be able to make available this defibrillator which is an essential piece of equipment.”

One of the main beneficiaries of the device will be the Cwmbran parkrun, which takes place at the Northfields Recreation Ground on Saturday mornings.

Run director Colin Wilmott said: “Having a defibrillator in place will provide great reassurance for participants and organisers alike.

“As a member of the core team which organises Cwmbran parkrun each Saturday I am really grateful to Cwmbran Trust for their generous donation and to Welsh Hearts for providing the defibrillator and training."

Event director Fiona Cross added: “Every Saturday morning it will be located on the parkrun course but during the week it will be available from Woodland Road Sports and Social Club should ever the need arise.

“Naturally we hope no one will need to use it but it's good news for the whole community.”
