A FUNDRAISING coffee morning arranged by Newport’s most senior politicians raised more than £300 for a cancer charity.

The event arranged by MPs Paul Flynn and Jessica Morden and AMs John Griffiths and Jayne Bryant raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support and was held on the first floor of Newport Market on Friday, October 7.

Ms Bryant, who was first elected as AM for Newport West in May, said she was delighted by how much the event had raised.

“Events like this are a wonderful way for our community to come together to show support for wonderful causes,” she said.

“This won’t be a one off. I hope we can work together again to put on events like this to raise money for good causes.”

Her Parliamentary counterpart Mr Flynn spoke of the importance of fundraising events such as these.

“Macmillan is one of the best value charities that invest all their donations in reducing the suffering of the curse of cancer,” he said.

“It was a great boost to see this hugely successful Newport fundraising event.”

Mr Griffiths, who represents Newport East in the Senedd, also said he was delighted by how much the event had raised.

“To raise over £300 is very valuable for Macmillan,” he said. “If you multiply it by the high number of coffee mornings being held across the country it is an important boost for the charity.”

And his Parliamentary colleague Ms Morden said: “One of the high points was the cake from the market and Bill King’s fantastic gingerbread.”
