LAST weekend, Park Run celebrated its 12thanniversary. It’s a great idea: free, timed runs every week. I joined the dedicated volunteers who staff the Cwmbran Park Run at 9am on Saturday, October 1.
There were over 150 runners, whose fantastic efforts were not adversely affected by the downpour that began just after they all set off. Park Run is what it says – a run, not a race. It isn’t about competing against others; rather, it is about doing your best and self-improvement. The time to beat is your own time from when you last ran the course.
What I was struck by was the inclusiveness - the runners were of all ages: Park Run is accessible, open to everyone. Even if you are away from home for a weekend, you can find a local Park Run in another part of the country at the same time.
Alongside the adult event is the Junior Park Run, which I was pleased to attend the following day in Pontypool Park. Not only do these events show the strength of our communities here in Torfaen, but they are also an opportunity to enjoy our fine scenery. The events also inspired me to make a promise: that I will complete a Park Run in the next few months.
Indeed, I am looking forward to starting my training this week. I’ve already had the opportunity to get used to fatigue as I’ve had a few sleepless nights in recent weeks. Our third child, and first son, William, was born on September 17 at home at 8.31am, weighing 8lbs 6.5oz. My wife Rebecca, our daughters Matilda and Florence, and I, would like to thank everyone who sent us their good wishes.
