Reading Hero: Congratulations to Caitlin Murphy of Ynysddu Primary for winning the Design a Superhero Competition run as part of the Read a Million Words in Wales reading initiative.
Ynysddu Primary is one of 20 schools to enter the competition, which required the children to write a brief description of a superhero to represent Read a Million Words in Wales.
Caitlin Murphy, an Ynysddu pupil, created Reading Rhiannon, and was the regional winner.
Head teacher Julie Protheroe said: "We are really proud of Caitlin winning this award.
"Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School can look forward to having a talented Year 7 pupil in September."
Caitlin won £50 for herself and £500 for her school to be spent on literacy-based activities or resources.
Caitlin's entry has now been submitted for the Wales-wide competition.
This has a £250 prize for the winner, £1,000 for the winner's school and the winning entry will be recreated by cartoonist Mike Collins and featured in a newspaper - good luck Caitlin.
Read a Million Words is run by the Basic Skills Agency on behalf of the Welsh Assembly.
Vicky Hyams, co-coordinator of the project, said the main aim of the scheme is to encourage reading through fun activities and games.
HGV Protest: Residents from Wattsville and Cwmfelinfach have been campaigning to stop lorries over seven-and-a-half tonnes using our valley as a rat run from Risca through to Pontllanfraith.
Residents say large lorries on their way to Nine Mile Point Industrial Estate make life difficult for those living near the main road.
Local residents Brian Evans, Steve Martin Cllr Jan Jones and others have set up a monitoring operation on the entrance to the industrial estate and are taking the registration numbers of vehicles that do not call in.
These were passed to the firms involved and the police.
It is hoped that by highlighting this problem, companies will instruct their drivers not to use this road unless absolutely necessary and drivers will think twice before taking a short cut.
Social Evening: Cwmfelinfach Residents Association is hosting its monthly social evening on Friday, June 29, at 7pm and has invited Don Touhig MP as guest speaker.
The AGM will be held on Friday, July 27, at 7pm and then there will be a well-earned break during August, starting back with the monthly coffee morning on Friday, September 14, at 10.30am on behalf of the Macmillan nurses.
Chapel barbecue: The whole congregation and its friends are looking forward to their BBQ taking place in the grounds of Siloh Chapel, Gelli Groes on June 30 running from 3pm to 5pm.
There will be great food for all and lots of fun and games for the youngsters.
Everyone who wishes to come along will be made very welcome.
Crusaders Training: The Crusaders have started junior football training for next season.
The under tens' sessions will run on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5.30pm to 6.30 pm on the Welfare Ground between Ynysddu and Cwmfelinfach.
Training for the under 13s will follow on the same nights from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
Come along and join in - everyone will be welcome.
Cycle Path: Regular users of the cycle path in front of Wyllie village will have noticed an improvement.
For the past two years the council's countryside service have extended its existing management to include the cycle path which runs alongside Wyllie village.
Where originally the vegetation was encroaching onto the path and the viewing area was overgrown, now the trees and vegetation lining the path are being managed by countryside rangers Clive Jones and Kevin Veidman and a viewing area has been cleared.
Care Home Fete: The summer fete at Craig-y-Trwyn Nursing Home in Brynawel is taking place on Saturday, June 30, and will be opened by the Mayor of Caerphilly at 2pm.
There will be fun and games for all with a flower stall, tin and bottle stall, cake stall and a barbecue.
Why not try your hand at splat the rat, hook a duck or guess the number of sweets in a jar and the weight of a cake?
All proceeds will go to the residents' fund. All are welcome so come and join in the fun.
