Pippa Bartolotti - Wales Green Party
Newport doesn’t need the tired old politics of yesterday. I’m standing for clean modern energy owned by the community, a publicly owned transport system and free university education. I’m against ideological austerity and for investment in an economy which works for everyone.
The Greens are the only party which understand that a more equal distribution of power, wealth and jobs is important not just for people, but also the environment. Large corporations are more concerned about making a profit than clean air, healthy soil and plastic-free rivers and seas. I will be working for an innovative economy and a clean, green industrial revolution.
Climate change will impact most on those with fewest resources, which is why a fairer democracy is crucial for us and the future of our children. I’ll be pushing for a country where everyone has a voice and a system which allows you to take back power, and where every vote counts.
I firmly believe that there are not enough MP’s prepared to stand up and challenge the status quo of an eternal boom and bust economy, dirty energy and bad education. I’ll be an outspoken advocate for the change to a modern, clean and healthy Newport.
Morgan Bowler-Brown - Plaid Cymru
In Newport West, Plaid Cymru is proud to have Morgan Bowler-Brown, a 25 year old married family man who is standing to give the good people of Newport West the choice to vote for Plaid Cymru – the party you can trust to defend Wales.
Morgan feels we should strike a balance between protecting precious green spaces and creating new affordable sustainable housing. The lack of which has lead to targeting of those most vulnerable, in some places forcing them out of their homes.
Because of this, he supports scrapping the bedroom tax, which while costing £17m will stop our local authorities facing a bill of up to £50m to pay for evictions and then re-housing.
Morgan knows small businesses which are the back bone of our economy need a champion to tackle the business rates scandal – he promises to help local traders to further revive Newport as a major shopping destination.
On transport – Plaid Cymru is campaigning against the proposed black route of the M4 relief road, as we feel alternatives that have less of an impact on the environment, keep the cities port active and are sustainable and cheaper should be a priority.
Vote Plaid Cymru on June 8.
Stan Edwards - Ukip
I have lived in Caerleon, Newport West for 41 years and standing as a grass roots Ukip candidate provides voters an opportunity to ensure unwavering Brexit. Brexit is not complete and key principles of VOTE LEAVE must be kept. Our interests, including fishing grounds, must be retrieved.
Project Fear is pushing people to a large Conservative majority which would deliver soft, remainer LEAVE as they cynically point to the threat of a lefty CND Corbyn government that would compromise our country’s safety and security.
A massive conservative majority, not renowned for its social conscience and responsibilities, would expose pensions, benefits and entitlements, of British citizens, to five years of uncaring ravages. Our people must be put before foreign aid. It’s Our People’s Money.
Also, mass migration is a global problem - our borders and citizens must be protected.
I stand to try to achieve LEAVE in its fullness. I am not a politician and will not make promises I cannot deliver but, if elected, I will attempt addressing local issues in the best interests of a safe, secure sovereign UK. UKIP is an opportunity for change.
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Having done all, stand.
Paul Philip Flynn - Labour
What will worry you most if you wake up on June 9th to a new Conservative Government with a big majority?
The best of NHS would be in danger. The instinct of extreme right MPs is to divide health in two. A privileged service for the few and a second class one for the rest of us.
Our underfunded but fair education and welfare services would be degraded if privilege and greed rule. Putting the cruelty back into foxhunting could set back animal welfare 40 years. Environmental safeguards would be weakened. Our delicate threatened human habitat would be in greater danger.
When I was first elected, I promised I would never lie to my constituents. The plain un-spun truth is what I have tried to provide - even when it uncomfortable for my party. Taking an independent line is not easy.
There is big job to be done to promote and defend Newport with the fighting spirit of Welsh Labour as created by my friend the late Rhodri Morgan.
The kindness of my staff in dealing with problems of individuals is admirable. We all want to continue. There are stormy days ahead. This is no time to change the crew.
Angela Jones-Evans - Conservative
Angela (maiden name Sullivan) was born and brought up in Newport. She went to Glasllwch and Bassaleg schools and lived in Rogerstone. She also worked in the Nursing and Midwifery College in Caerleon. Her father was a teacher at Fairoak and Duffryn schools, while her mother taught at Maesglas and St Joseph’s.
Angela has spent much of her adult life teaching and training. She believes training and upskilling are vital in giving people the chance to fulfil their potential and in order to have access to job opportunities, including those the right Brexit deal under Theresa May’s leadership will bring.
As a small business owner, Angela will prioritise the Newport economy, creating the right environment to attract and sustain businesses, and provide high quality, sustainable jobs.
Angela will campaign for better transport links in Newport, including in the west of the city, and the growing community of Caerleon. She will also work with the Police and other agencies to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime.
Angela is proud of her city’s industrial history and will work hard to build on Newport’s strengths to help make it a safe, attractive and prosperous place in which to live, work and study.
Sarah Lockyer - Liberal Democrat
The Welsh Liberal Democrats will always fight to protect our health and care system and to ensure it can carry on delivering for future generations.
In Wales, nurses currently have to care for more patients per member of staff than anywhere else in the UK. We have been successful in pressuring the Welsh Assembly to pass the ground-breaking Welsh Liberal Democrat law making Wales the first part of Europe with a legal duty of care for safe nurse staffing levels.
Our local Lib Dem candidate for Newport West - Sarah Lockyer - said “coming from a background in elderly and mental health social care, I am passionate that our NHS provides a high quality of care to everyone in both areas of mental and physical health extending the Lib Dem Law to maternity departments, mental health services and community care”.
Both Sarah and the Newport Liberal Democrats believe in creating an NHS that puts the patient first.
