A CWMBRAN school which according to some parents refused pupils the right to remove jumpers without permission in the warm weather has decided to review its uniform policy.
The Argus previously reported that more than 100 people had signed an online petition ‘Empower Croesyceiliog Comprehensive School pupils now #Jumperjustice’ to give pupils “the freedom” to remove jumpers “when they feel the need to”.
According to a letter from Croesyceiliog School, the current uniform policy is pupils “are expected to request permission to remove any item of full uniform”.
Amy Cole, who set up the online petition, previously expressed her "deep concerns" for her son and his peers.
She said: "My son, Calum, goes to the school and a few times recently when he’s asked a teacher to take off his jumper he wasn’t given permission. I felt shocked with this because I’m quite sure that my son and other children can tell when it is too hot.
“My son has felt ill at times because of the weather. Wouldn’t it be more productive for them to take off their jumpers without having to ask permission because it would be quicker?”
The 31-year-old civil servant, who lives in Pontnewydd, had complained about the situation and received a letter from the school on Thursday.
She said: "I got a letter after exhausting the complaints procedure about the ridiculous uniform policy.
"The letter was from the board of governors and the school who said that a full uniform policy and it's implementation would undergo a review.
"I'm really pleased about the outcome and am thankful to everyone who has helped and supported us to take action."
Shaun Smith, 37, whose daughter goes to the school, also welcomed the announcement.
He said: "I found out about this on Facebook and it's a victory for common sense.
"Hopefully the lack of consistency in the policy will be addressed.
"This is jumper justice."
A Torfaen Council spokesman said: “We can confirm that the governing body and school will be reviewing their uniform policy to ensure it is fit for purpose.
“The school always allows children to remove their jumpers when it is warm and during the recent hot weather relaxed their uniform policy to allow pupils to wear polo t-shirts and shorts to school.”
