A NEWPORT club which once played host to Welsh musical legands such as Sir Tom Jones and Dame Shirley Bassey has been demolished.
Work to knock down Ebbw Bridge Club and Institute in Maesglas began today having been approved by Newport City Council in January.
Plans to replace the club with housing had also been approved by the council in March 2016.
The new building will contain 16 one-bedroom flats and five two-bedroom flats, along with two ground-floor shops.
The former social club had opened in 1936 but falling membership numbers forced it to close in 2014.
It was purchased for £260,000 - more than twice the guide price of the property - by eventual developers Borley in February 2015.
Comedians Jim Davidson and Frank Carson are also reported to have played at the club during its history.
