NEWPORT’S Belle Vue Park is celebrating double success after scooping two prestigious awards.
The park in Waterloo Road has been awarded Green Flag status for the tenth year running, while also being given heritage status for the first time since opening in 1894.
A flag raising ceremony will be taking place at the park on Thursday, August 24 at 2.35pm and a tree will be planted to mark the tenth anniversary.
Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony which will be followed by live music at the bandstand during the afternoon.
While housing the public park, conservatories, pavilion and a bandstand, it also contains a number of rare specimens of flowers and plants.
Cllr Deb Harvey, the city council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, said the city is “very proud” of the park and thanked the members of the Friends of Newport Ornamental Parks for the sterling work they do at both Belle Vue and Beechwood parks.
The councillor added: “For Belle Vue Park to achieve the Green Flag award for 10 years running is just fantastic and to be awarded Heritage Status for the first time acknowledges the hard work of everyone in the council’s green services team and the work of our many volunteers.
“Visitors to Belle Vue Park have so many things to admire especially the floral displays which are outstanding.
“I would like to thank Keep Wales Tidy for giving us these two prestigious accolades, Newport City Council is very proud to accept these honours.”
