• It’s been 15 years since the discovery of Newport’s Medieval Ship. Last week, Friends of Newport Ship organised a fantastic concert performed by St Woolos Sinfonia at the Riverfront Theatre in front of a packed audience. Huge congratulations to all involved. You can visit the Ship Centre at Unit 20, Estuary Road, Queensway Meadows Industrial Estate. Ring 274167 or email chair@newportship.org for opening times.
• The new Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) and Neonatal Unit at the Royal Gwent Hospital was opened by the Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary Vaughan Gething earlier this month. The investment of £3.4million from the Welsh Government for the MIU saw a much needed upgrade of the existing facility which was based in a demountable building. With over 82,000 patients attending the Emergency Department each year, the new MIU will help ease pressure on our busy emergency department. Similarly the investment in the Neonatal Unit will help ensure the most vulnerable babies receive the very best of care and is a much improved facility for families and staff.
• It was a pleasure to show the ‘Youf Gang’ in Shaftesbury around the Assembly last week. They’ve had an action packed summer full of activities organised by Gwent Police Community Support Officer Richy Davies. The ‘Youf Gang’ are aged between 9 and 14 and they have worked hard over the last year to help improve their local environment and tackle anti-social behaviour. The questions asked and their strong desire to be active in their community shows they are an inspiration to other teenagers and potential leaders of the future. If you know any young people in Shaftesbury who would like to get involved with the group, contact Richy.Davies@gwent.pnn.police.uk
• With Rodney Parade opening its doors for the start of a new season for our three teams, it’s great to see the pitch in a good condition. I think the only ones who won’t be pleased are the family of ducks who made it their home last season! Our grassroots sports teams are always looking for volunteers to help support and encourage young people. This also goes for Newport County AFC, Newport RFC and the Dragons RFC. If you would like to get involved on match days or volunteer with the administration side of things please get in touch with the clubs directly. Our clubs need our support. Let’s hope this is a great season for sport in Newport.
