A NEW crematorium to serve Newport and Monmouthshire opened today.
Langstone Vale Crematorium, in Magor Road, will aim to relieve congestion on the Greater Gwent crematorium, in Cwmbran.
A spokeswoman for the crematorium said: "Sitting against a background of established woodland, the new crematorium has been designed in local stone and natural finishes, in keeping with the character of the rural area, blending into its surroundings.
"The quiet location offers the privacy that families appreciate at a funeral."
The spokeswoman said the chapel will seat 96 people.
Richard Evans, managing director of the Westerleigh Group, who will operate the crematorium, said: “I am delighted to see the new crematorium finished.
"It seems a long time since we first won planning permission and I am grateful for the confidence placed in Westerleigh by Newport Councillors.’
Mr Philip Blatchly, of Philip Blatchly & Son funeral directors, organised the first funeral at the crematorium.
Mr Blatchly said: "We are very pleased that the new crematorium is finally open as it will provide the right level of service for bereaved families in the surrounding area.
"The chapel is spacious and light and all of the facilities have been built to a very high standard.”
James Tovey, of Tovey Bros funeral directors, in Newport, said the setting is "very attractive".
He said: " You can see that care has been taken to ensure that the building blends in with the surrounding countryside.
"I am sure that families will appreciate the feeling of space and natural setting.’
