EIGHTEEN years on, we look back at our archives to see the babies that were born in Gwent on the first day of the century. We would love to find out how the babies, now 17-year-olds, are getting on and how they will be celebrating their 18th birthday.

There were 11 babies born on January 1, 2000 at the Royal Gwent Hospital and nine at Abergavenny’s Nevill Hall.

Two babies – one in each hospital – tied in the race to be the first ones to arrive in the new millennium in Wales, each arriving at five minutes past midnight.

They were Amy, daughter of Emma Powell, from Blackwood, who weighed in 6lb 11oz; and Jake Topping, a first baby for Jane and Petter Topping, from Tredegar, who made his arrival a week early.

Other babies born at the Royal Gwent Hospital included Lucy, who was born at 9.45am to Christine Scutts, from Risca. Chloe arrived for Nichola Richards, of Fairwater, in Cwmbran, at 11.27am.

The tiniest baby – Derri – was born at 4.44pm weighing just over 2lb. Derri was the son of Marcia Wall, from Abertillery.

At 10.21pm, Masuma Chaudhury, from Newport, gave birth to a baby who was yet to be named.

The last baby to be born at the RGH on January 1, 2000, was Nicolas Jon - the son of Sian Gotobed, from Newport.

Babies born at the Nevill Hall hospital included a baby daughter for Fay Brand, in Cwmbran, and a son born to Nichola Jenkins, of Nantyglo.
