A GRANDFATHER has gone under the needle and had a tattoo for charity.

Darren Rice raised £210 after getting inked by Tony Ellul, from Pins and Needles Tattoo Studio, in Pont Faen, Liswerry.

The proceeds went to the Turner Syndrome Support Society (TSSS), a cause close to his heart as his step-granddaughter - Beechwood seven-year-old Kara-Jay Horton - has the rare condition.

It occurs when girls have one X chromosome, rather than two, and can leave sufferers unable to grow normally without injections.

Mr Rice said of his new ink: “It didn’t really hurt, as I already have a Manchester United tattoo.

“The butterfly I had is symbolic of girls who die at birth, or miscarriage.

“We try to raise money and awareness for TSSS as they’re a small charity and don’t receive government funding.”

Kara-Jay’s parents - Kelly and Clinton Horton - also recently raised £703.24, along with Mr Rice, by a holding a fourth annual fun day.

Their charity work won them the TSSS Ambassador of the Year Award in 2017.
