AHEAD of Newport County AFC’s FA Cup clash today, political figures have put aside their differences to unite in sending the team and its supporters good luck messages.

More than 1,000 County supporters – the ‘Amber Army’ – are expected to travel to Middlesbrough for the fourth round tie this afternoon.

John Griffiths, AM for Newport East, said: “I would like to wish everyone at Newport County the very best of luck for their fourth round FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough.

“From the board to club staff, volunteers, players, and our talented manager (and fellow Pill boy) Michael Flynn – regardless of how far we get on our FA Cup journey this year, you have done us all proud. Up the ‘Port.’”

The MP for Newport East, Jessica Morden, echoed similar remarks, saying: “Good luck to County ahead of the big game against Middlesbrough. The incredible win against Leicester showed that anything can happen in the FA Cup.

“With over a 1,000 County fans making the long journey north to cheer on the team, there is every reason for Michael Flynn and his players to believe another upset is possible.”

Jayne Bryant, AM for Newport West, also wished the team good luck.

“The city is excited for another County FA Cup run and we’re all looking forward to the match," she said. "I know the team will do us proud.”

The leader of Newport City Council, Councillor Debbie Wilcox, said: “I would like to wish Newport County all the best in their FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough tomorrow.

“We have a lot in common with Middlesbrough as we both have transporter bridges and both team managers hail from the city. However, with apologies to Tony Pulis, who is held in high regard in Newport, we will be hoping for another giant-killing performance tomorrow from the County.

“I’m sure that whatever happens, the team, the club and the supporters who travel to the game, will do us proud once again.”

And Conservative councillor, Matthew Evans added: “I was glued to the TV after their epic win against Leicester the atmosphere and publicity was amazing.

“No reason why they can’t do it again, everyone is talking about it so come on County you can do it .”

If Newport County defeat Middlesbrough today they will have made it to the fifth round of the FA Cup. The two sides previous met during the 1986-87 third tier.

Kick off is at 3pm.
