FOLLOWING concerns about smaller general waste bins being introduced in Newport, we tell you everything you need to know about the changes.
What’s the size difference?
The new bins are 120 litres, which is 60 litres smaller than the original 180 litre bins. The new 120 litre bins will be rolled out over the next three months, between April and June.
Will everyone have these smaller bins?
Houses with five people or less will have the new bins, but larger households can apply for bigger bins. Households of six to seven people can apply to have the original 180-litre bin and households with more than eight people can apple for a 240-litre bin.
In these instances, residents must prove that they are already recycling as much as possible.

What items will be prohibited from the new smaller bins?
As this is part of an initiative to become eco-friendlier, people should avoid putting recyclable materials in the bins. Support is on hand, but frequent failure to comply with these regulations may result in people being fined.
What can I recycle and where?
Most plastics and metals are recyclable, with these items being put in an orange recycling bag, marked ‘plastic & cans only.’
Glass, although recyclable, should not be put in the orange recycling bag. Instead, this can be recycled along with cardboard in a green recycling box.
Paper, electric and textiles can be recycled in a blue recycling box.
Food waste can be disposed of in the small brown bins provided by the Council. Please use bin caddy liners, which are free. You can order these online, or collect them from your local library, the Information Station, or – between 8am and 6pm on weekdays – from main reception at Newport Civic Centre.

What about nappies?
Families living with children under the age of three, or houses with residents using incontinence pads can request an additional collection for hygiene waste.
You can apply online at newport.gov.uk/en/Waste-Recycling/What-We-Collect/Nappy-collection.aspx

WasteSavers runs three shops which will be happy to take old furniture off your hands.
