Police are connecting two other incidents to the reported stabbing.
At 9.30pm on Saturday, April 6, police say they got a report of criminal damage to a car on Osbourne Road in Pontypool.
A separate, racially aggravated offence was then said to have taken place a short while later at Peri Cottage restaurant in Pontypool.
It was following this that police say the 22-year-old man was assaulted as allegedly stabbed outside Pontypool Tesco.
A Gwent Police spokesman said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information regarding the incidents to please contact Gwent Police on 101, quoting log number: 533 06/04/19.
