A MOTHER whose daughter's finger was sliced off in an accident has praised NHS workers for being able to stitch it back on.
Kelly Probert-Wilmott was watching TV this week while two of her children, Lexi, five, and Malachi, four, were both playing together in the house and front garden.
But unbeknown to her, a horror was about to unfold after Lexi accidentally shut the front door on her middle finger and cut it off.
"My daughter was screaming and I came running," said Mrs Probert-Wilmott, who lives in Hendre Farm Drive, Newport.
"I screamed when I saw her finger was missing. It was on the floor.
"I panicked and could not breathe. You could see the bone sticking out on top."
She added: "My other child, J-Mal, came downstairs and picked up the finger from the floor."
The mother's only concern was how to get her daughter as quickly as possible to the Royal Gwent Hospital.
After seeing her neighbour, she and her daughter arrived at the hospital less than 15 minutes later.
"We thought it would be best to get in the car rather than wait for an ambulance," said Mrs Probert-Wilmott.
"We got to the Royal Gwent Hospital at 3.45pm and they were fantastic."

Mrs Probert-Wilmott has now thanked NHS workers for the care shown to her daughter.
"I just want to say how thankful I am," she said.
"They were excellent with my daughter. As soon as we got there we were seen right away. They managed to get the finger back on after an operation.
"My husband, Alan, and I cannot say thank you enough. The Royal Gwent Hospital and Swansea Morriston Hospital were brilliant.
"Sometimes the NHS gets bad press, but I can honestly say they were brilliant."
