THE search is on for you to rummage through your attics and drawers for any memorabilia connected to the iconic Newport Transporter Bridge.
The city’s landmark feature will be highlighted in a series of features being published by the South Wales Argus and Newport City Council.
The idea was sparked after a photograph featuring people sunbathing on the riverbank, near the 113-year-old bridge in the mid-1980s, was published.
The idea is to show the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which previously allocated £1 million to the Transporter Bridge project, that there is huge support among people in Gwent for an application which aims to capture £10 million to secure the bridge’s future - by building a new visitor centre and pay for the costly maintenance of the bridge.
And now the Argus and Transporter Bridge team, made up of council officers and members of the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge, are appealing for information and photographs to help with the HLF redevelopment project.

Councillor Deb Harvey, the council’s cabinet member for Culture and Leisure, said: “Back in 2018 the council won the first part of a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) of £1 million which will be used towards a new visitor centre and to carry out general maintenance and repairs of the bridge.
“And although we have fantastic archives at the museum of drawings, plans and objects relating to the bridge, what we need now are the human interest stories.
“We want the displays that will go into the new visitor centre to truly reflect our city’s history and the many links people have to our bridge so we want to hear from anyone who may have worked there, used the gondola to cross the river, or enjoyed visiting it.
“We are sure there are many people out there with stories to tell and our project team want to hear from you.”
