A PERSON who was hit by a train near Newport Railway Station this morning has died.
The incident happened around 8am, a spokesman from National Rail has said.
Trains between Newport and Abergavenny were either delayed or cancelled.
A spokesman for the force confirmed that the person was killed at the scene.
He said: “BTP officers attended the line close to Newport Railway Station on Saturday after a report that a person had been struck by a train.
“Officers from BTP and Gwent Police attended the incident of which was reported to police at 08.12am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.
“Paramedics from the local ambulance service also attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Earlier this morning, a spokesman for Transport for Wales said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Newport and Cwmbran the line is currently blocked.
"Disruption is currently expected until 12.15 and road transport is being sourced to act as a shuttle service between Hereford and Newport."
