A MAN has been acquitted of the attempted rape and indecent assault of a young girl when he was a teenager in the 1990s.

Craig Callaghan, aged 42, of Oak Terrace, Fleur-de-Lys, Blackwood, was cleared of all charges following a trial at Newport Crown Court.

The jury of five men and seven women found him not guilty of one count of attempted rape and four counts of indecent assault.

He had denied the offences.

The prosecution was represented by Matthew Cobbe and the defendant by Jeffrey Jones.

Judge Richard Williams discharged Mr Callaghan and thanked the jury for their “diligence”.
