NEWPORT'S war dead were remembered this morning amid the background noise of city traffic, with a short and socially distanced service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph.
Normally, Clarence Place would have been closed to traffic as thousands of people flocked to the site to pay their respects the the veterans, dignitaries and standard bearers.
This was a far smaller - though no less solemn - gathering, with traffic ignoring the green lights at the surrounding junctions for at least a part of an otherwise impeccably observed two minutes silence.
Around 200 people attended to pay their respects - with distancing being observed throughout.
A small number of similar services were held across Gwent - some indoors and by invite only - but many thousands of people chose to observe the two minutes silence at home.
