UPDATE 9.51PM: The road remains closed which is still affecting traffic travelling southbound on both lanes on the A40 through Monmouth.

UPDATE: 8.12PM: The road remains closed after a pedestrian was hit by a car.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and two ambulances from the Welsh Ambulance Service are at the scene, as well as the police.
One person was injured and has been taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

UPDATE 5.47PM: Emergency services have now closed both southbound lanes of the A40 Monmouth. Avoid the area if possible.

GWENT Police are urging motorists to avoid a main road in Monmouth after a road traffic collision.
The A40 road at Monmouth from the Dixton roundabout southbound, just past the Wye bridge lights, is now closed (5.32pm).
Emergency services are at the scene and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.
