The head boy at King Henry V111 Comprehensive School, Abergavenny has been chosen to represent Wales in a world debating championship.
Jonathan Worgan, 17, was a member of the King Henry school team which finished second in the final of the Julian Hodge Bank Schools' Debating Championship at the Welsh Centre for International Affairs in Cardiff.
Last weekend he attended a training course with the competition organisers and was chosen to represent Wales as one of a team of five to compete in the world championships in Washington DC next September.
The team will spend ten days in America, and each team member is expected to raise some of the cost, with the rest provided by sponsorship.
The last world championships saw 35 teams competing and the title was won by Scotland. Next year's event will mark two decades since the competition began. A Welsh team has never won the competition.
Mrs Lynne Morgan, head of the sixth form at King Henry School said they were all very proud of Jonathan's achievement and wished him well for the world championship.
