For the sixth year, at its annual dinner , held this year at the Sessions House, Usk Civic Society gave framed certificates for local schemes deemed to have enhanced the community.
Four awards were made this year, present ed by the Society's President, Lord Raglan. Three were given for the redelevopment of one of the oldest parts of the town, in Twyn Square, where a number of shacks and substandard buildings have been replaced by a new and sensitively designed set of two shops with flats over, and workshops at the rear. The Society commented, "The subtle design using simple shapes and details ensures that the newblends perfectly with the old buildings of the Square."
Lord Raglan presented awards to the owner, Mark Hazell and architect Graham Frecknall who also received the award for the project architect, Richard Hardwicke, who was unable to attend due to illness.
John Love, Chairman of Llangybi Community Council, received the fourth award for the Community Council's work in restoring St Cybi's Wellwhic h lies to the rear of the Parish Church and Churchyard, alongside the track from the village to the River Usk.Its restoration culminated in a blessing by the Bishop of Monmouth and wil low trees and daffodils have been planted around the clear spring water.
More than sixty members and guests at the dinner were entertained by harpist Laura Cowburn before and during the meal, and also enjoyed a musical interlude from the talented Burchell-Hazlett family who performed with the three daughters of the Huxley family.
