A MAN was struck by a train and died near Cwmbran railway station on Monday afternoon, British Transport police officials said yesterday.
The man was hit by the 16:06 Cardiff to Abergavenny, Arriva Trains Wales service and pronounced dead on the scene.
British Transport Police officers were called to the accident's site - approximately a quarter of a mile from Cwmbran station - at around 16:40.
Officers closed the line for almost an hour whilst they carried out necessary duties.
A British Transport Police spokesperson told the Argus: "At approximately a quarter of a mile from Cwmbran Station the train struck a man.
"The rail-line was handed back to Network Rail by police at 17:45.
"The incident is being treated as non-suspicious and the body was taken to Royal Gwent Hospital."
