A TEENAGER who stabbed a woman in the stomach after taking a cocktail of drink and drugs was given a suspended sentence.

Lauren Jenkins, 19, of Cherwell Walk, Bettws, admitted wounding Natalie Palfrey, assaulting Abigail Flynn and possessing a bladed object.

Prosecutor Tony Trigg told Cardiff Crown court how Jenkins had taken cannabis worth £40 as well as a considerable amount of alcohol in the hours before the incident.

It was said that on October 4 last year, Jenkins was involved in a confrontation outside a fish shop in the Ely area of Cardiff and later punched Ms Flynn, splitting her lip.

Matters didn't end there and during another incident Natalie Palfry intervened.

"Jenkins produced a knife and stabbed her in the lower stomach causing a one and a half inch wide cut. She also slashed her across the rib cage causing a superficial injury.

Ms Palfry was treated in hospital where she had a suspected punctured bladder.

When arrested Jenkins produced the knife and said she had it because she owed money and had been threatened.

Her counsel Jonathan Rees said she had not intended causing serious injury.

About 18 months before he said, she had been the victim of a screw driver attack and had been kidnapped by two men but escaped.

He said she had suffered depression, had attempted suicide and self harmed herself and had been on a counselling course in Newport.

Jenkins was sentenced to detention at a young offender institution for 12 months, suspended for two years, made subject to a two year supervision order and ordered to carry out 180 hours unpaid work for the community.
